Hello. My name is Malek . I am Iranian refugee with my wife and I have two children Sammi and Roda. Sammy is 12 years old and next year starts his last year in primary school in Australia. Roda is 4 years and she just started Australian Kindergarten. In Iran I was technician of instrument in power plant (control system). Here is a drawing by Malek’s daughter, called ‘Happy Australia Home’
Me and my children’s lives at risk in Iran, it is very bad situation and not a happy place for my wife and children always scared. The Government was threatening me and my family personally and I was fear for our lives. It was my reason that I wanted to migrated to Australia, safety for my family, no more war and no more fears. It was a very difficult journey for me and my family and it was full of dangers on my way to achieve goal of safety. It took over a year before we got here, my wife and children were very scared but I had to be strong for them but I was scared too. If we stayed maybe we die, if we leave for Australia maybe we die too.
In this way we lost everything we had, our home, our family, our friends all left behind. I only wish I had come to Australia we lived so scared every day and we want to not be scared. After all the hardships we got to the (Christmas) island in year of 16 September 2012 and we being happy and i said that they help us with happiness. I was in the camp for six months and it was good, we had safety, food, beds and lots of Australians to help us.
When i come to Melbourne out of camp several people helped me and my family and my friends too, to always be alive in our hearts, to find school for my kids and anything for our empty home, they were from Welcome Group and we think this is what all Australians are like, so kind and helping. We try to help them to help other people too because we want to be like true Australians, they help other people who need help. We were scared when we first leave detention, many Australians visit us and many talk with us on Facebook but none help us when we get out, we were so alone.
In the first days is very hard for me to speak to other people and conversation with them and i didn’t know what to do but on my way in my life i saw angel. that she teach me English and spend all her time of herself for me and try to teach me anything of live in Australia . Even her mother help me with English too and I never meet her.
I said that one night several men attacked my home and broken windows and broken my car. My family was so scared, my children didn’t sleep in their beds I stayed awake at nights in front room watching to see if they come back for long time. The only one who helped me it was my Australian angel Penny and she and her friends Claire and Shayne, they paid the damage to help me. I never met Penny’s friends Claire and Shayne but Penny tell me how much they help refugees too near their home, they are not of Melbourne. I am so grateful my family has Australian friends like them.
My friends had trouble when they first leave camp too with neighbour who lit our pram on fire and their front door of their home. He was no a nice Australian being very bad for my friends, they were scared. Penny came to my house with her friend Kim and they get many Welcome Group friends to help my friends and us. Never before we seen such kindness from beautiful people, we really appreciate Australia people have big hearts and caring.
I am indebted to the Penny coz she teach Australian culture and their language she is my teacher and important thing she is the best friend for me. She is Australian person and I am happy to come here and i like Australia because you showed it to me, you are pride of me and other refugee people. Happy Birthday and thanks for all things.
We hope to stay in Australia so my children can get safe and good education, I want my wife to get better English and I will keep working to improve my English and we hope to work and help Australian community for thankyou for giving us safety and friends.
